Create and delete tags from the repository's Tags page. See Branches & Tags for the read-only tag list and tag detail pages.

Create a Tag

Give the new tag a name and a starting point - any existing branch, tag, or commit hash - then choose the tag type.

Lightweight vs. Annotated

A lightweight tag is a plain pointer to a commit, with no message of its own. An annotated tag additionally requires a message, and carries its own author, date, and message independent of the commit it points to - the tag detail page shows this message for annotated tags.

Delete a Tag

A lightweight tag deletes with a single confirmation. An annotated tag requires typing its exact name into a confirmation field before the deletion is accepted, since its message is lost along with the tag.
