Account Settings

Profile Visibility

Your profile page (found at your account's own URL on your instance) can be shown to everyone, shown without your identity, or hidden entirely. Public is the default.

Public - the normal profile: your public repositories, display name, and join date are visible to anyone.
Anonymous - a bare listing of your public repositories, with no display name, bio, or other identity information attached.
Private - the profile page does not exist for anyone except you. Every other visitor sees the same 404 a nonexistent username would produce.

Note: Profile visibility only affects your profile page. It does not change repository access. Your public repositories stay public and reachable at their own URLs under every level - Anonymous and Private hide your profile, not your public repositories.

How to Change It

Step 1 - Open your profile settings

Go to your account's profile settings page.

Step 2 - Pick a level

Choose Public, Anonymous, or Private from the visibility option.

Step 3 - Save

Save the form. The new level applies immediately.

Repository Defaults

Your preferences page lets you set personal defaults applied when you create a new repository:

Default branch name - the initial branch name pre-filled on the repository creation form.
Default visibility - whether new repositories start out public or private.

These are only starting points. Each repository creation form still shows every field editable - you can change the branch name or visibility for any specific repository before creating it. A saved default never locks a repository's settings.

How to Change It

Go to your account's preferences page.
Under Repository defaults, pick a default branch name (or enter a custom one) and toggle

the default visibility.

Save each field. New defaults apply the next time you open the repository creation form.
